National Aluminium Company Limited (NALCO) is a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Mines, Government of India. The company was incorporated in 1981 and has its registered office and headquarters at Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

What NALCO does

NALCO is an integrated aluminium producer. Its operations cover bauxite mining, alumina refining, aluminium smelting, power generation, and export of alumina and aluminium through port facilities.

Operating units

  • Bauxite mine on the Panchpatmali Hills, Damanjodi, in the Koraput district of Odisha.
  • Alumina refinery at Damanjodi.
  • Aluminium smelter at Angul.
  • Captive thermal power plant at Angul, which supplies power to the smelter.
  • Port facilities at Visakhapatnam for export of alumina and import of caustic soda.

National Aluminium Company Limited began with the discovery of East Coast bauxite in 1975 and the Government of India’s investment decision in January 1980. The company was formed in January 1981, and the foundation stone was laid by Indira Gandhi in March 1981.

Building the integrated complex

  • 1985: Port facilities and the bauxite mines were commissioned.
  • 1986: The alumina refinery and the captive power plant were commissioned.
  • 1987: The aluminium smelter was commissioned, and sales of aluminium began.
  • 1989: NALCO was registered on the London Metal Exchange, and the complex was dedicated to the nation.

Later development

NALCO received Navratna status in April 2008. The NALCO Foundation for corporate social responsibility was registered in July 2010. More recent phases include coal production from the amalgamated Utkal D and E mines and steps to begin operations at the Pottangi bauxite mine.
